Membrane Bioreactor
CINOTECH has extensive experience in designing and fabricating a Membrane Bioreactor (MBR) for treating your wastewater with high BOD/COD and suspended solids.  MBR is a new technology that combines the traditional activated sludge treatment with the new membrane separation technology to achieve a high treatment standard for wastewater. As no final sedimentation tank is required, the overall footprint of the plant is much reduced and this is beneficial to most users due to high land cost in Hong Kong. The technology allows much higher MLSS concentrations and longer sludge ages to be used without compromising the effluent quality. It also allows slow-to-biodegrade matters to be biologically treated in the system because of the longer sludge age. The amount of sludge generated from the system is also relatively less than that from a conventional activated sludge treatment plant. Other benefits include ability to withstand loading shocks and stability in effluent quality.
In a MBR system, the bio-reaction and water filtration can be processed at the same time, making sludge settling un-necessary. The concentration of the sludge can be much higher than that in traditional way. The retention time of wastewater time in the tank (HRT) and the retention time of the sludge in the tank (SRT) can be controlled separately. MBR can treat not only the normal sewage, but also some high organic polluted wastewater.
Physical and Chemical Properties of Membranes

Our membranes are constructed from PVDF, which is highly resistant to strong acid and strong alkali. The physical configuration of the membrane can be in the form of either hollow fibres or flat plates with a nominal pore size of 0.1μm. Because of this small pore size, the activated sludge and large molecular organic matter in the wastewater can be blocked by the membranes, leaving the clean water to permeate out through the membranes.

System Configuration

Our MBR system will comprise the following basic components, irrespective of the
physical configuration of the membranes:
●  A rust-proof cast iron water tank where the membranes are housed in specially constructed stainless steel metal  frames;
●  A array of coarse diffuser pipes below the membranes to supply oxygen for the degradation of the organic matters  in the wastewater, while scouring the external surfaces of the membranes, thus reducing fouling of the membranes;
●  An air blower to supply air to the diffusers in the tank;
●  A permeation pump to suck the clean water through the external surface of the membranes;
●  A rinsing pump to rinse and backwash the membranes at regular intervals, or as needed;
●  A control box to control the on/off of the pumps and the intervals and duration for rinsing.
●  A sludge pump at the bottom of the water tank to remove the sludge as needed.
Figure 1 shows a typical setup of the system, with the control box on the outside and the blower and pumps underneath the control box.

Treatment Capacity of MBR System
Our MBR systems, designated CSL/MBR, are available in treatment capacities of 5m3/hr, 10m3/hr, 15m3/hr and 20m3/hr, or as requested by clients.
